Tribute to Lucy
A Tribute to Lucy: Champion of my Heart
On September 16, 2025, I said goodbye to my beloved Lucy, closing the chapter on a remarkable 15-year and 4-month journey that transformed my life in ways I never imagined.
Lucy joined our family during a quiet transition—when the house had emptied and the future felt uncertain. I didn’t have a plan for that little black puppy, but she had one for me. With a wagging tail and an unshakable “I CAN DO IT” spirit, Lucy took the wheel and led us on an unforgettable adventure.
She was my first in so many ways. My first show dog, my first Grand Champion, and the grand dam of Blackforest® Belgians. With guidance from her breeder, Lorra Miller, Lucy helped me bring the A and B litters into the world, shaping a legacy that lives on.
Agility became our shared passion. Though I never intended to compete, Lucy’s intensity and joy were contagious. She was a rocket on the course—vibrating at the start line, flying through weaves, and soaring over jumps with precision and speed. We faced challenges, but Lucy never gave up on me. Together, we earned her Master Agility Champion title and competed at the highest level, including the AKC Agility Invitationals. Our bond was built on trust, love, and the thrill of the game. We were a team—inseparable and in sync.
Her final trial in 2023 at the Belgian Sheepdog Nationals was bittersweet. At 13, she finished her PACH and gracefully retired from sport. But Lucy never retired from life. She spent her golden years chasing her beloved ball, swimming, playing with her daughter Roxy and granddaughter Kiera, enjoying slumber parties with Auntie Edrie, and snuggling on the sofa—always the best cuddle companion.
In 2025, Lucy returned to the Nationals one last time, proudly prancing as the oldest veteran. She glowed with happiness, basking in the admiration she so richly deserved. But time, as it does, caught up.
This summer, as her body began to fade, we took one last trip to our favorite beach. The wind danced through her black fur as she played in the surf, joyful and free. I chose to let her go with dignity, ensuring she felt only love—not pain.
Letting her go was the hardest decision I’ve ever made. But I did so with the same love that carried us through every trial, every triumph, every quiet moment. Lucy was more than a champion in the ring—she was the champion of my heart.
Thank you Lorra for entrusting me that wagalicous blue girl.
